Uncle Spurgeon is Apocalyptic Christian Rock. The music is very eclectic, ranging from hard rock to slow ballad but all with a consistent goal...to speak Truth. It is apocalyptic in that the music comes from the view point that we find ourselves in the latter stages of this temporal existence. Not necessarily in a negative way but in a hopeful one considering the one who began this adventure will soon be returning. Unlike modern contemporary Christian music Uncle Spurgeon takes a “horizontal” approach exploring the struggles of those outside the fellowship and of the prodigal who has become distracted by the cares of this realm.
Uncle Spurgeon began with the reuniting of two old band mates who performed together in several "secular" bands. They found that they both had the desire to create new music deeply rooted in their faith. Rick Atwood and Daryl Smith both grew up in the musically rich and diverse state of Mississippi. With careers spanning decades they have accompanied premier artists, performed in legendary venues, and been featured on successful recordings. Individually, they have opened for such acts as Christian Rock Pioneer Mylon LeFevre and 80's icon Tommy Tutone and have been privileged to perform with the likes of Blues Legend McKinley Mitchell, Southern Gospel Stalwart Jeff Steele, Dove Award Nominee Vicki Yohe, and The Goodines.
The founding members of Uncle Spurgeon have had the experience of playing such legendary venues as the Delta Blues Festival and Nashville’s Exit/In, Elliston Square, and the Cannery as well as countless not-so-legendary venues tucked away in every corner of the South, the Mid West, and parts of the Atlantic Seaboard.
